A small red ribbon flutters from a scrubby tree, indicating the walking route alongside some of the oldest sections of the Great Wall of China. This photo was made back in 2010 just after Chinese new year. We hiked alongside the wall, the guide telling us how the wall provided employment for the locals for hundreds of years, maintaining it for the nation. This had begun to change in recent decades as the crumbling wall materials made for good walls and paving in nearby homes and farms.
